Casa de Familia

November 2013 marked the completion of Casa de Familia, a 16-unit apartment complex on the GSS Santa Maria Shelter Campus that provides permanent housing for homeless families.

Casa de Familia features one three-bedroom unit, four one-bedroom units and 11 two-bedroom units. It has drug and alcohol diversion counseling on site and immediate access to Good Samaritan’s detoxification programs, as well as
Head Start and after-school children’s services on the campus.

The apartments themselves range in size from 700 square feet to 1,000 square feet. They include spacious kitchens — complete with full-sized refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, dishwashers and even walk-in pantries — and have been designed to let in enough natural light to provide an airy atmosphere.

Tenants pay 30 percent of their income in rent.

The $3 million project was financed primarily with HUD funding and took
nearly eight years to piece together.
